quantities of water are available on the island. However, the power system is still under the process of experimental operation. The required power is provided by means of generators. It covers an area of 7.400 hectares and is covered with shrubs, pine trees and the local cedar tree.

The island is filled with superb sand beaches such as the Sarkiniko, Corfos, Agios Ioannis, Potamos, Lavraka and the southern headland Tripiti which present a beautiful composition of arcades diving into the sea.
Gavdos is situated 20 miles south of Crete
A steamship travels from Gavdos to Crete twice every day docking at Paleohora and Sfakia after a journey 3.5 and 2 hours respectively.

The southernmost tip of Greece, the southernmost tip of Europe. The eternally virgin piece of land, standing on its own, separated from God himself. Leaving Chania, travel to Sfakia or Palaiohora, and then on to the beautiful and unknown Gavdos. An historical island, that has since Minoan era offered natural harbours to pirates travelling merchants and castaways.

Ancient pottery and other features dating back to the era prior to 3.000 B.C. as well as the Minoan era of 1425 B.C. can be found in Gavdos.

A marble statue of the period 500-300 B.C. from Gavdos, is displayed in the British Museum.

During internal wars conducted in Crete in the Hellinistic period, the island of Gavdos was used as a stronghold of pirates.

The well-known pirate Barbarosa, used Gavdos as a hide out in 1539.

The ship transferring the apostle Saint Paul on his journey to Rome in order to stand trial, almost sank while navigating off the shore of Gavdos, so he had to spend a considerable amount of time on the island. Another group of 99 Church Fathers experienced the same situation.

Homer states Gavdos numerous times in his writtings. The island is also mentioned in relation to Calypso.

The most famous castaway of that period is the apostle Paul, who stepped onto the island in 64 A.D. after the ship he was being transferred on as a prisoner from Judea to stand trial in Rome, was forced to seek refuge in the natural harbour of Gavdos. Same was the case for the 99 Church Fathers from Egypt along with Saint John the Theologian. The renowned legend of the most celebrated castaway ever, Ulysses, to the island of Calypso is associated with celebrated Gavdos.

Gavdos is equipped with a telephone system. All medical emergencies are reffered to Chania, where the patients are transferred by helicopter.The sea of Gavdos is filled with shoals of fish, crawfish, shrimps, swordfish, etc.
